Marschner initially worked as a draftsman in the 1930s before he trained as a singer at the Dresden Conservatory. He made his debut in Karlsbad (Sudetenland), not far from the village where he was born. From 1942 to 1944 Marschner sang at the opera in German-occupied Oslo, and after the war in Oldenburg and Frankfurt am Main. In 1949 Kurt Marschner came to the Hamburg State Opera , where he was a member of the ensemble for several decades. At this venue he was involved in over 4,000 performances.

In addition to his stage work, Marschner has also performed in front of the camera since the early 1960s: initially he played and sang small parts in major works such as Fidelio and Die Zauberflöte , in later years Marschner also took on larger supporting roles such as Balthasar Zorn in Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nuremberg or even leading roles like Orpheus in Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld . In some productions he only lent the performer his singing voice (e.g. in 1953 for La traviata and 1964 for Die Reise auf den Mond ).

Kurt Marschner was buried in the Ohlsdorf cemetery in Hamburg, grid square Bp 65 (northwest of chapel 13).
