Glencoe (local pronunciation: Glin-ko ) is a city in Etowah and Calhoun Counties in northeast Alabama . Glencoe is part of the Gadsden Metropolitan Statistical Area . The city was founded in 1939 and, according to the 2016 census, has a population of 5,135.

Glencoe is part of the statistical metropolitan area around in the county administrative seat of Gadsden in the south-central part of Etowah County. While Gadsden and Attalla form the northern part of the conglemation on the north side of the Coosa River, the towns of Southside , Glencoe and Hokes Bluff are on the south bank. The main area of ​​the city is within Etowah County; only foothills protrude into Calhoun County, south of it. Geographically, the region is shaped by the transition from the Cumberland Plateau in the north to the somewhat more level Piedmont Plateau south of it. As is typical in northeastern Alabama, the urban area is dominated by forest . The western side of the city borders directly on the Coosa River , which loops here. The most important road connection is the US-431 highway , which runs through the city in a north-south direction.

history

The place began as a rural settlement in the 19th century . A quarry was added as an additional line of business in 1853 . By the turn of the century, five more quarries were in operation. Another growth factor was the connection to the rail network of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad . The first post office went into operation in 1877. The name of the place was borrowed from the Scottish town of Glencoe . In addition to the existing elementary school, a high school opened in 1918 . Glencoe obtained independent city rights as an Incorporated City in 1939. Economic development was slowed down by the Great Depression . In 1940 Glencoe had no more than 669 inhabitants. The urban infrastructure expanded from the 1930s through additional facilities. In 1939 the power supply was connected to the grid of the Alabama Power Company. In 1941 a municipal water supply system was put into operation . Glencoe has had a volunteer fire department since 1946. Mail has been direct delivery since 1962. Since the 1990s, Glencoe has been the location of the Silver Lakes Golf Course - part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail that runs north-south across Alabama.

According to the 2016 Population Composition Survey, Glencoe had 5,122 residents. 2353 of them were male , 2769 female . There were 4,307 residents older than 18, 825 children or young people ; 1123 residents of the city stated to be older than 65 years. The median age was 45.9 years. 4614 of the respondents described themselves as white (90.1%), 282 as African-American (5.5%) and 89 as Indian natives (1.7%). Regardless of the question about the census declaration Race , 11 residents (0.3%) indicated the additional designation Hispanic , 116 residents (2.3%) described themselves as belonging to two or more races.

Economy, education and culture

The schools in Glencoe are part of the Etowah County School System. Currently there are: an elementary school , a middle school and a high school. According to the Encyclopedia of Alabama , 1,048 high school students attended them in 2012; the number of employed teachers was 64.

Others

Glencoe was named the City of Patriotism by Alabama Governor Bob Riley in September 2003 - a special recognition among the Alabama communities.
