Southside is a city in Etowah and Calhoun Counties in northeast Alabama . The urban area, which - apart from two small outskirts - is almost entirely in Etowah County, is part of the Gadsden Metropolitan Statistic Area . With just under 8,600 residents in 2016, Southside is one of the fastest growing cities in Alabama.

geography

As an Incorporated City , Southside is part of the Gadsden Metropolitan Statistical Area - the county's most densely populated heart area in its southern center. Within this area, the urban area of Southside forms the southern tip. Southside is on the south bank of the Coosa River . Neighboring cities are clockwise: Rainbow City and the county seat of Gadsden on the north side of the river and Glencoe east of Southside on the south. The central national traffic connection is the Alabama State Route 77, which leads in a north-south direction through the city to Gadsden. The nearest airport is Northeast Alabama Regional Airport , southwest of Gadsden, approximately five miles away .

history

In the 18th and 19th centuries , the area of today's city belonged to the tribal area of the Creek , whose border with that of the neighboring Cherokee ran not far north of the Coosa River. The forced relocation of the Creek and Cherokee to Indian Territory in the 1830s opened up the central and eastern part of Etowah County for settlement. In 1850, the village merged with the surrounding patches of Green Valley, Cedar Bend and Pilgrims Rest - with the name Southside being retained for the new town.

The town of Southside was initially a small, rural community whose main source of income was agriculture . However, manufacturing and industrial operations - including a flour mill and a cotton mill - set up relatively early in the southern district of Green Valley, which is remote from the river . In the first half of the 20th century, several ferries carried goods and people across the Coosa River to Gadsden. In 1931 the city received electrical street lighting and in 1957 its own water supply . In the same year, Southside established itself as an independent community with city status. Another important infrastructure improvement was the commissioning of the 250-meter-spanning, concrete-pillar-supported Southside Bridge over the Coosa River.

In the second half of the 20th century, the city grew from fewer than 450 inhabitants (1960) to almost 8,400 (2010). Due to the enormous growth in population that is associated with the city status, Southside is one of the fastest growing communities in Alabama. An important factor for this ascent was the school system , which developed from small beginnings but has since been well developed . In 1923 the Southside School became part of the Etowah School System. In 1944 a fire destroyed the old school building ; In 1948 a new one was completed. Southside is now home to the largest school in Etowah County: Southside High School, which opened in January 2007, began operations with 741 students enrolled.
