Ricardo Alberto Gareca Nardi (born February 10, 1958 in Tapiales ) is a former Argentine football player and current coach . He has been the coach of the Peruvian national team since 2015 .

Player career

During his playing days Gareca played for Boca Juniors , CA River Plate , América de Cali , Vélez Sarsfield and CA Independiente, among others .

For the national team of Argentina he ran from 1981 to 1986. Among other things, he scored on the last day of the qualification for the Soccer World Cup 1986 to equalize to 2-2 against Peru, which meant direct qualification for Argentina. At the World Cup he finally became world champion with Argentina.

Coaching career

After his playing career Gareca struck a career as a coach. From 1997 he first coached the Argentine clubs CA Talleres and CA Independiente . In 1998 he returned to Talleres and won the Copa Conmebol with the team in 1999 . Gareca then worked as a trainer for Colón Santa Fe , again CA Talleres and the Colombian clubs CD América and Independiente Santa Fe . In September 2007 Gareca went to Peru for the first time to Universitario Deportes and won the Apertura 2008 with the team.

At the end of 2008 Gareca returned to Argentina and took over the first division club Vélez Sarsfield . Here he won the Clausura in 2009 and 2011 as well as the Inicial 2012. At the end of 2013 he left the club. In 2014 he coached the Brazilian first division club Palmeiras São Paulo for a few months .

In February 2015 Gareca became the coach of the Peruvian national team . At the Copa America 2015 he reached third place with the team, at the Copa America 2016 the team failed in the quarter-finals. In 2017 the team qualified for the 2018 World Cup .
