Jack Greenwell (born January 2, 1884 in Crook , County Durham , † November 20, 1942 in Bogotá ) was an English football player and coach.
Career
player
Before Greenwell joined FC Barcelona in 1912 , he played for his hometown club AFC Crook Town . He made his debut for Barcelona on September 29, 1912 in a 4-2 win over FC Espanya de Barcelona . In 1913 and 1916 he won the Catalan championship alongside famous players such as Paulino Alcántara , Francisco Bru and Romà Forns .
Trainer
Following his playing career, he became the first official coach of FC Barcelona in 1917. Greenwell remained coach of FC Barcelona until 1924; only Johan Cruyff has spent more consecutive seasons as coach of FC Barcelona. He directed his first game on July 7, 1917 in a 3-1 victory over CE Europe . In his first tenure at Barça, he won the Catalan championship five times and the Spanish Cup twice .
After he left Barcelona in 1924, he coached CD Castellón from 1926 to 1927 before he was subsequently coach of Espanyol Barcelona . Greenwell led Espanyol to a disappointing seventh place in the newly formed Primera División in the 1928-29 season . However, Espanyol's fans were comforted by winning the Catalan championship and the Copa del Rey in the same year. Greenwell trained Espanyol for another year until he returned to FC Barcelona in 1931, via the RCD Mallorca detour . There he could not build on his earlier successes and only won the Catalan championship again in two years. Nevertheless, he is still the record holder for most seasons as coach of FC Barcelona.
From 1933 to 1934 he was the coach of Valencia CF , which he led to winning the Campeonato de Valencia and the final of the Copa de España , in which the team was defeated 1: 2 by Real Madrid .
In 1939 Greenwell went to Peru and coached Universitario de Deportes and the Peruvian national team . With Universitario de Deportes he won the Peruvian championship in 1939 and with the national team as host the Campeonato Sudamericano in 1939 .
