Vladimir "Vladica" Popović ( Serbian - Cyrillic Владимир "Владица" Поповић ; born March 17, 1935 in Zemun , Kingdom of Yugoslavia ; † August 10, 2020 in Belgrade ) was a Yugoslav football player and coach.

Player career

The midfielder began his career with Red Star Belgrade . There Vladimir Popović was champion in the 1st Yugoslav Football League in 1956, 1957, 1959, 1960 and 1964 and won the Yugoslav Cup in 1958, 1959 and 1964. For the 1965/66 season, Popović moved to VfB Stuttgart in the German Bundesliga . After he came to two Bundesliga appearances this season, Vladimir Popović moved to the Stuttgarter Kickers in the Regionalliga Süd . Before he ended his playing career, Popović played for a year in Venezuela with Deportivo Canarias in 1968 .

National team

Between 1956 and 1965 Vladimir Popović made 20 games for the Yugoslav national team . The 1958 World Cup ended for him and his selection with a quarter-finals defeat against Germany . At the 1962 World Cup, Popović was defeated by Yugoslavia in the match for third place to host Chile .

Coaching career

Vladimir Popović's coaching career began in Venezuela . There he coached the Portuguesa Fútbol Club , with which he was Venezuelan champion in 1975 and 1979. Other coaching stations in Venezuela were Anzoátegui FC , Deportivo Italia and FC Caracas . In Colombia , Popović was the head coach of Santa Fe CD , Atlético Nacional and Deportivo Cali . In Yugoslavia, he initially took over the coaching post at Napredak Kruševac and FK Trepča . In 1991 Vladimir Popović became the head coach of Red Star Belgrade and won the World Cup against CSD Colo-Colo . In 1992 he was champion in the last season of the 1st Yugoslav football league . Croatian and Slovenian clubs were no longer competing because of the Yugoslav wars and the Bosnian clubs withdrew from the league for the same reason during the season. After this season Vladimir Popović was coach of the national team of Peru for a year .
