Asociación Club Deportivo Cali is a football club from the Colombian city of Cali .

history

It was founded in 1912 under the name "Cali FC" and began its professional history in the Colombian football league on August 15, 1948. The club colors are green and white. The club has won eight national championship titles in its history.

Deportivo Cali was the first Colombian club to reach the final of the Copa Libertadores in 1978 , but lost to Boca Juniors . In 1999 the club was in the final against Palmeiras from São Paulo for the second time. In 1998 Deportivo reached the final of the Copa Merconorte .

With coach Leonel Álvarez , the club was runner-up in the back series in 2013 and was able to win the Superliga de Colombia against Atlético Nacional in January 2014 . The 2014 season started relatively weak, so Álvarez was sacked in February. The entry into the final round was also clearly missed with the new coach Héctor Cárdenas . The return series, however, went better. The club reached sixth place in the league phase and narrowly missed the finals in the subsequent group phase. In the Apertura 2015, however, Deportivo Cali won his ninth championship with the new coach Fernando Castro Lozada . In the final, the club was able to prevail against Independiente Medellín.

In the 2016 season, Deportivo Cali was able to qualify for the final round in both half-series, but failed in each case in the quarter-finals. In April 2016, Mario Yepes was introduced as a trainer. The club stuck to Yepes for the 2017 season despite the early departure . In March 2017, however, Yepes was fired after a mixed start to the season. Héctor Cárdenas was introduced as his successor . Under the new coach Cali reached the final of the Apertura, in which it was defeated by Atlético Nacional and thus became runner-up.

The return series was less pleasant for Deportivo Cali and was finally finished in 14th place. As a result, Sergio Angulo replaced Cárdenas in October 2017 .

Cali finished the league phase of Apertura 2018 with the new trainer Gerardo Pelusso in sixth place. In the subsequent quarter-finals, the club Atlético Nacional lost. In the back series, the entry into the final round in tenth place was missed.

For the Apertura 2019 season , the Argentine Lucas Pusineri was signed as the new coach, who had won the championship title of the Colombian second division with Cúcuta Deportivo in the preseason . In the Copa Sudamericana 2019 , Cali was eliminated in the second round against Peñarol Montevideo . In the league, the club qualified second for the final round, but could not move into the final.
