history

Beginnings and first decades in the first division

Atlético Bucaramanga played from the second edition in 1949 in the Colombian first division , but could never play for the title there. During the crisis in Colombian football in the mid-1950s, the club had financial problems, withdrew from the championship in 1953 and did not participate in 1954 and 1955 either. Bucaramanga returned for the 1956 season. The club reached its most successful season until then in 1960 , in which it reached third place.

In the early 1970s, the club had financial difficulties again, so that he did not take part in the 1971 season and gave his right to start at Real Cartagena , where most of the players played Bucaramangas that year. A year later, Atlético Bucaramanga returned.

In 1981 there was a tragedy at the Estadio Alfonso López during a game between Atlético Bucaramanga and Junior from Barranquilla . There were riots by fans who protested against referee decisions. Soldiers intervened and shot the fans. Four people died and over 30 were injured. The incidents were never finally resolved.

Relegations and runner-up

Atlético Bucaramanga rose for the first time in 1994 from the first division, but was able to celebrate the championship in the second division in 1995 and move up. In the 1996/97 season, the club was initially able to win the Torneo Adecuación , but lost the championship final against América de Cali and was thus runner-up. This qualified Bucaramanga to participate in the Copa Libertadores 1998 , where he immediately reached the second round.

In 2001 the club was relegated to the second division for the second time, but was able to benefit from the expansion of the league to 18 teams and secured a relegation to remain in the first division.

Third relegation and seven years in the second division

The club experienced their third descent in 2008 . In the first season in the second division in 2009 , Bucaramanga reached the final, but lost it to Cortuluá . Even the relegation game against the penultimate of the first division, Deportivo Pereira , the club could not win and thus remained in the second division. In 2010 , Bucaramanga reached the group stage, but was last in Group B. In the 2011 to 2013 seasons, the club was only able to place in the top eight teams twice, but clearly missed reaching the final. In the 2014 Hinserie Bucaramanga was able to complete the league phase in first place and reached the semi-finals, but lost it to Jaguares de Córdoba on penalties. In the back series, the final round was reached again, but the final was missed. Also in the special promotion round for traditional clubs of the second division in January 2015, the club missed promotion.

However , Atlético Bucaramanga was able to dominate the 2015 season and was first in the league phase with an eleven point lead. In the subsequent final round, the club was able to secure first place in the group and thus promotion to the first division after seven seasons in the second division with a 1-0 win against Universitario Popayán on the penultimate matchday . In the subsequent final against Fortaleza FC , Bucaramanga was also able to prevail and won his second title in the second division.

In the Hinserie 2016 Bucaramanga struggled, although moving in the middle of the table, could not break away from the relegation places in the relegation table. In May 2015, Bucaramanga separated from the promotion coach José Rodríguez and signed Flabio Torres . In the back series Atlético Bucaramanga was consistently among the top eight teams, secured relegation early on and qualified for the final round. In the final round, the club was only defeated in the semifinals against Deportes Tolima on penalties. After the season, however, Torres and those responsible for the club could not agree on a new contract, which is why the coach left Bucaramanga after six months. As the new coach for the season 2017 was Harold Rivera presented.

After a mixed start to the Hinserie 2017, Rivera was released after the eighth game day. Édgar Moreno acted as interim coach for two games. Fernando Castro Lozada was introduced as the successor to Rivera . Bucaramanga was able to finish the league phase in eighth place and qualified for the final round. In the quarterfinals, the club was eliminated against Millonarios FC . After Castro's resignation, which followed a very poor start to the return series, Jaime de la Pava was introduced as the new coach in August . However, the team's performance remained mixed and the relegation could only be secured on the last day of the game and with only one point ahead of Cortuluá , the redemption only came through a goal in the last minutes of the parallel game between Once Caldas against Cortuluá. After the return series, the club and Jaime de la Pava parted ways. The Argentine Diego Cagna was signed as the new coach .

Shortly before the end of Apertura 2018 , which ended in 16th place, the coach Diego Cagna was sacked after a 2-4 defeat by Independiente Medellín . His successor was Carlos Mario Hoyos , who had become runner-up with Bucaramanga in 1997, for his third term in the club. In August 2018, however, Hoyos was released again. As his successor, Óscar Serrano was signed as the official coach with Flabio Torres as an advisor. After a strong return series, Atlético Bucaramanga was able to reach the final round in fourth. There the club was eliminated against Independiente Medellín. For the 2019 season , Flabio Torres was confirmed as the official head coach. Óscar Serrano will stay with the club as an assistant coach. After a weak start to the season, Torres was released in February. His successor was initially on an interim basis Carlos Giraldo . The aperture finished in 17th place. Hernán Torres Oliveros was introduced as the new coach in May .
