The Estadio Alfonso López in Bucaramanga, a city with a good 500,000 inhabitants in the department de Santander in northeast Colombia , was built in 1941 and opened on December 12 of the same year. When the Atlético Bucaramanga club was founded in 1949, he chose the stadium as his home ground. Atlético Bucaramanga is one of the smaller clubs in Colombia's professional football and has never won the Colombian football championship. The club's greatest success is probably the participation in the Copa Libertadores 1998 , where they survived the group phase in a group with América de Cali and the Ecuadorian representatives Barcelona SC Guayaquil and Deportivo Quito and only scored 1: 2 in the round of 16 at Club Bolívar at home in Estadio Alfonso López and a 0-1 in the second leg in La Paz failed. Atlético Bucaramanga is currently playing in the first Colombian league .

The Estadio Alfonso López is named after Alfonso López Pumarejo (1886-1959), a Colombian liberal politician and two-time president of the country. Today it has a capacity of 28,000 spectators. This capacity was increased after renovation work in preparation for the 1996 Juegos Deportivos Nacionales in Bucaramanga, an annual national sports event in Colombia. Previously, there was space for 12,000 people in the stadium, or 20,000 after the first expansion work in the early 1970s. In addition, the U-20 South American Women's Championship took place in Colombia in 2010 and the Estadio Alfonso López served as the venue for the game for third place and the final, in which Brazil beat Colombia 2-0 . The Colombian men's national team has also played in the Atlético Bucaramanga stadium. There are also competitions in other sports, such as freestyle motocross , and concerts.

The stadium was renovated from 2016 to 2017. In addition to various modernizations, the artificial turf was also replaced by natural turf . The reopening took place on July 20, 2017 with the game Atlético Bucaramanga against Millonarios FC .
