history
Location of the stadium in Tolima |
The Estadio Manuel Murillo Toro was completed in 1955 during the reign of the dictator Gustavo Rojas Pinilla and initially bore his name. After its removal on May 10, 1957, it was initially renamed Estadio 10 de Mayo . This was followed by renaming in Estadio Serrano de Avila , after the donor of the property, and in Estadio San Bonifacio , after the patron of the city. Eventually it was named after the two-time Colombian President Manuel Murillo Toro .
In 1981, ahead of a league match between Deportes Tolima and Deportivo Cali, there was a stadium accident in which 17 people died after part of a grandstand collapsed.
After construction, the stadium had a capacity of 8,000 spectators, which was later expanded to 18,000 seats. Today there is space for 30,000 spectators in the stadium.
