From 1991 to 2013 the Estadio Alberto Grisales was the home stadium of the second division team Deportivo Rionegro , a long-time second division team. Deportivo Rionegro has now been renamed Leones FC and now plays in Itagüí after stints in Bello , Turbo and Envigado .
A comprehensive modernization of the stadium took place in 2009 before the South American Games 2010 in Medellín, during which some competitions were held in the stadium in Rionegro.
The association Rionegro Águilas (also known as Águilas Doradas) has been playing in Rionegro since 2015 . The club was previously located as Itagüí FC in Itagüí and then as Águilas Pereira in Pereira . Moving to Rionegro means returning to Antioquia .
For the 2016 season, the previously existing artificial turf was exchanged for natural turf and the stands were also repainted. The conversion was completed in just one month.
