Bello was founded in 1676 by the Spaniard Gaspar de Rodas . According to the chronicles, it was in July 1541 that Jeronimo Luis Tejelo's troops found their way into the wide Los Aburrá valley . Indigenous farmers had set up a scattered settlement with houses there. They mainly lived in the settlement of Niquías , now part of Bello. In 1574 Gaspar de Rhodes asked the town hall of Santa Fe de Antioquia for a land permit in the Aburrá valley, on the one hand to use it for pastures and refreshment stations, and on the other hand to supply the conquests with food. From 1576 his request was granted. So he was allowed to use the domain in the name of the Spanish crown and to rule over the land and its monasteries , villages and herds. From 1613 the place was called Hato Viejo instead of Hato Rhodes or Aburra to distinguish it from later settlements.
