Rionegro , also known as Santiago de Arma de Rionegro , is a municipality ( municipio ) in the Department of Antioquia in Colombia . It is located about 50 kilometers from Medellín , the capital of Antioquia.
geography
Rionegro is at an altitude of 2130 meters and has an average annual temperature of around 17 ° C. Rionegro is located in the Oriente Antioqueño sub-region . The municipality borders Guarne and San Vicente in the north, Retiro , Envigado and Medellín in the west, Marinilla and El Carmen de Viboral in the east and La Ceja in the south .

The municipality of Rionegro has 128,153 inhabitants, of whom 84,338 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).
history
The area of today's Rionegro was discovered for the Spaniards in 1541 by Álvaro de Mendoza, who was under the command of Jorge Robledo . Since then the place was known by the names La Montaña , San Nicolás , Valle de Rionegro and Rionegro until 1783 the name was set as Santiago de Arma de Rionegro . Rionegro played an important role in the independence struggle of later Colombia at the beginning of the 19th century.

Rionegro is home to Rionegro Airport, Medellín Airport and the second largest in Colombia. The airport was named after General José María Córdova from Rionegro from the time of the Wars of Independence.
Sports
The football club Deportivo Rionegro , which currently plays in the Colombian second division , was based in Rionegro until 2013 . The club played its home games at the Estadio Alberto Grisales . At the beginning of 2014, Deportivo Rionegro moved to Bello and in 2015 to Turbo . The Águilas Doradas association has been based in Rionegro since 2015 and has been called Rionegro Águilas since the beginning of 2016. Rionegro was a venue for various competitions of the South American Games, which were held in Medellín in 2010.
education
The Catholic private university Universidad Católica de Oriente has its seat in Rionegro . The university was founded in 1982 and is run by the diocese of Sonsón-Rionegro.
