El Carmen de Viboral is a municipality ( municipio ) in the Department of Antioquia in Colombia .

El Carmen de Viboral is located in Antioquia , in the sub-region Oriente Antioqueño , at an altitude of 2150  m above sea level. NN , 56 km from Medellin . The municipality borders in the north on El Santuario , Marinilla and Rionegro , in the west on La Ceja and La Unión , in the south on Abejorral and Sonsón and in the east on Cocorná .

The municipality of El Carmen de Viboral has 49,076 inhabitants, of which 33,278 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

In the area of ​​today's El Carmen de Viboral there were probably haciendas from 1714 . From 1752 the name El Carmen was used. Church life in the village began in 1787 with the importation of an image of Our Lady on Mount Carmel from Quito . There has been a parish in the village since 1807 and El Carmen de Viboral has been its own administrative unit since 1814.
