Guarne is a municipality ( municipio ) in the Department of Antioquia in Colombia . It is located about 25 kilometers from Medellín , the capital of Antioquia.

geography

Guarne lies at an altitude of about 2150 m above sea level. NN in the sub-region Oriente Antioqueño and has an average annual temperature of 17 ° C. The municipality borders Copacabana and Girardota in the north, Medellín in the west , Rionegro in the south and San Vicente in the east and northeast .

The municipality of Guarne has 51,265 inhabitants, of which 19,357 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

The area of today's Guarne was discovered for the Spaniards in 1541 by Álvaro de Mendoza and subsequently slowly settled. At first, guar was an important place in the course of gold mining . In 1781, Guarne played a role during the Comuneros uprising . At the beginning of the 19th century the name was briefly changed to Elida .

economy

The most important industries in Guarne are agriculture ( potatoes , legumes and fruit ), pig and milk production and pond farming (especially trout farming). There is also the food industry .

Sports

The training ground of the Atlético Nacional football club from Medellín, which was built in 2008, is located in Guarne . In the back series of 2012 , the then second division team Alianza Petrolera also played its home game in Guarne. The club had an agreement with Atlético Nacional that year.
