Caucasia is a municipality ( municipio ) in the Department of Antioquia in Colombia . It is located about 285 kilometers from the capital of the department, Medellín .

Caucasia is located in the north of Antioquia in the sub-region Bajo Cauca at an altitude of about 50 m above sea level. NN and has an average temperature of 28 ° C. Caucasia lies on the Río Cauca . The city is bordered by La Apartada and Ayapel in the department of Córdoba in the north, Cáceres in the west , Nechí and El Bagre in the east and Zaragoza in the south .

history
Caucasia was founded on April 12, 1886 by Clemente Arrieta under the name Cañafístula . At first the place was a corregimiento , first by Cáceres until 1912, then by Margento until 1936 and then by Nechí until 1942. In 1927 Caucasia got its current name. Caucasia has had parish status since 1942.
economy
Caucasia is the economic center of the Bajo Cauca sub-region. Since its inception, fishing , agriculture, and mining have been the main industries of the Caucasia. Its economic development was closely linked to its strategic location on the Río Cauca. For a long time, Caucasia was also the municipality with the highest amount of gold mined in Colombia. Today cattle production also plays an important role. In addition, Caucasia is an important trading center between Antioquia and the Colombian Caribbean coast .

Caucasia has its own regional airport, Juan H. White Airport ( IATA airport code : CAQ , ICAO code : SKCU ), from which the Enrique Olaya Herrera airport in Medellín is served in particular .

The Universidad de Antioquia is located in Caucasia . The location was opened in 1996.
Sports
In Caucasia from 2005 to 2008 the football club Bajo Cauca FC was based, which played in the Colombian second division and played its home games at the Estadio Orlando Aníbal Monroy , which has a capacity of 4000 spectators. The starting right was sold to Itagüí FC in 2008 due to financial problems .
