Envigado is a municipality ( municipio ) in the Department of Antioquia in Colombia . It borders directly on Medellín , the capital Antioquia, and has been part of the official metropolitan region of Valle de Aburrá since 2016 .

Envigado lies at an altitude of about 1575 m above sea level. NN . The city borders Medellín in the north, Rionegro and Retiro in the east, Itagüí and Sabaneta in the west and Retiro and Caldas in the south .
population
The municipality of Envigado has 243,609 inhabitants, of whom 236,103 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality. 3,952,494 people live in the metropolitan region (as of 2019).
history
Before the arrival of the Spaniards, the indigenous people of the Anaconas lived in the area of today's Envigado . The Spaniards first came to the Aburrá Valley in 1547 in search of gold. In the following years a slow, rural settlement took place. An urban settlement emerged only with the official establishment of the community in 1775 and with the establishment of the first parish of Santa Gertrudis.

The automobile and commercial vehicle manufacturer Sociedad de Fabricación de Automotores and the Latin American food retail company Grupo Éxito have their headquarters in Envigado .

Sports
Envigado is home to the football club Envigado FC , which has already won the Colombian second division twice and has currently been back in the first division since 2008 , in which it had played for several years. The club plays its home games at the Estadio Polideportivo Sur . Envigado has hosted various competitions for the South American Games held in Medellín in 2010.
