Sabaneta is a municipality ( municipio ) in the Departamento de Antioquia in Colombia . In terms of area, it is the smallest municipality in Colombia. Sabaneta is located in the metropolitan area of Medellín , the Área Metropolitana del Valle de Aburrá .

Sabaneta is a medium- sized town and is located in Antioquia in the metropolitan region of Valle de Aburrá , 14 km south of Medellín , at an altitude of 1550 m above sea level. NN . Sabaneta is the smallest municipality in Colombia at 15 km². The city borders Envigado to the northeast , Itagüí and La Estrella to the north and Caldas to the south .

The municipality of Sabaneta has 54,573 inhabitants, of which 43,622 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality. 3,952,494 people live in the metropolitan region (as of 2019). Sabaneta experienced an enormous increase in residential high- rise buildings ( edificios ) in the years up to 2016 , which led to a defining aspect of the community. Citizens of the municipality are increasingly complaining about the lack of space on the streets, which each time with the construction of new tall buildings results in the reduction of green spaces. In September 2016, the mayor of Sabaneta, Iván Montoya, announced that eleven sub-plans were being revised because the urban expansion rate had risen too noticeably, which will ultimately have an impact on the environmental protection areas. At this point in time, the municipal administration had already withdrawn 157 building permits, 121 in 2016 and 36 in 2017.
history
Before the arrival of the Spaniards, the indigenous people of the Anaconas lived in the area of today's Sabaneta . Settlement by families of Spanish origin began in 1750. Sabaneta was founded in 1899 as the corregimiento (the seat of jurisdiction) of Envigado. Sabaneta received the status of a municipality on October 25, 1964. In the past, before the city became independent, there were many old houses, many trees, cattle, horses and traditional families who settled in the area. They worked for the railroad, in a ceramics company, and in plantations and coffee plantations.
Sabaneta is very popular for the worship of Mary, aid of Christians , whose sanctuary is in the Church of Santa Ana. The tradition dates back to 1968 when a rumor surfaced that Maria was supposed to appear at 4 p.m. To pay tribute to the Church, people from all over the Aburrá Valley make pilgrimages to the Church today to pray for the protection of the saint known in this region as the “Virgin of the Assassins” (La Virgen de los Sicarios) because in During the 1970s, 80s and 90s, and to this day, members of criminal groups visit the sanctuary. There are regular fairs all day on Tuesdays.
