Call of the Mastodon is a compilation album by the US progressive metal / sludge band Mastodon . The album was released on February 7, 2006 through Relapse Records .

Emergence

After the band moved from Relapse Records to the major Reprise Records label , their old label Relapse Records released a compilation of early recordings by the band in early 2006. All tracks were first published in 2000 under the title 9 Song Demo . Eric Saner, who later dropped out, was still the singer. A year later, the band first released the single Slick Leg , followed by the EP Lifesblood . Both releases contain the songs of the demo with the exception of the song Call of the Mastodon . The vocals on both releases were performed by guitarist Brent Hinds and drummer Brann Dailor . The single and the EP were produced by Matt Washburn.

For the compilation Call of the Mastodon , the songs were remixed and mastered by Matt Washburn . As a bonus, the album includes the theme song Call of the Mastodon , which was previously unreleased. The Japanese version of the album also includes a live recording of the song Where Strides the Behemoth , a song from the debut album Remission . In 2014 Relapse re-released the album as a limited vinyl edition.

reception

Wolf-Rüdiger Mühlmann from the German magazine Rock Hard described the songs as "bombs" that " explode mostly more brutal, wacky and hateful than the excellent 2004 album Leviathan ". He described the compilation as excellent and awarded 8.5 out of ten points. Captain Chaos from the online magazine Vampster described the album as "money-making" because of the short playing time, but praised the "successful and very loving artwork". Lorenz von König from the online magazine Metalnews.de was also critical and described the compilation as a "rip off".
