Steambreather is a song by the American progressive metal band Mastodon . It is the third single from their seventh album, Emperor of Sand .

Origin and background

The song was written by guitarist Bill Kelliher and drummer Brann Dailor . In the text of Steambreather the Nazca Lines in Peru are mentioned. These are geoglyphs that were created by an ancient civilization as a fertility ritual to combat the long periods of drought in the area. The protagonist of the album, suffering from cancer, tries to let it rain to alleviate his suffering. The song was recorded at The Quarry Recording Studio in Kennesaw with producer Brendan O'Brien . With a length of 5:03 minutes, Steambreather is the third longest song from the album Emperor of Sand .

A music video was shot for the song, directed by Essy May and Stevie Gee . The video shows two metalheads attending the self-help seminar Breath of Life - Deep Nasal Enlightenment . The event turns out to be a dark gathering, at which the seminar leaders bring the guests into surrealistic , dream-like states. The guests' bodies are turned into a kind of porridge.

reception

For Lucas Prieske from the online magazine Stormbringer , Mastodon have seldom written “such a thoroughly epic and captivating song” whose refrain “would open a new era in the band's songwriting”. From “big melodies to hard riffs” “everything would be represented”. According to L. Saunders of the online magazine Angry Metal Guy , the "excellent" song evokes memories of Alice in Chains ' "underrated self-titled album awake", which is supported by Brann Dailor's "catchy vocal melody, stellar drumming and impressive rock music". According to Phil Witmer from the online magazine Noisey , the music video is very funny, but it would make you scared of noses. The video would look like David Cronenberg was directing the movie Wayne's World .

The German magazine Visions had the music video on their list of the 20 best music videos of 2017.
