The song was written and recorded in the fall of 2005. Text and music were contributed by all four band members. "Colony of Birchmen" pays homage to the song "The Colony of Slippermen" by the British band Genesis . Drummer Brann Dailor called the Genesis album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway his all-time favorite. Josh Homme from the band Queens of the Stone Age can be heard as guest vocalist. The song was produced by Matt Bayles .
A music video was shot for the song . Here you can see the band playing in a cave . There is a forest on the surface where strange things happen to the people and trees that live there. Directed by Jonathan Rej and Tom Bingham. "Colony of Birchmen" was used in the Rock Band 2 and Saints Row 2 video games .
reception
For Daniel Thalheim from the online magazine Bloodchamber.de, the song seems “particularly casual” and seems to be dedicated to the Écriture automatique . Roland Wiesmüller from the online magazine Metal1.info described “Colony of Birchmen” as “Übersersong”, which starts with a riff that “makes him fall on his knees in awe”.
The song was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Metal Performance category. However, the award went to the band Slayer for the song "Eyes of the Insane".
