Cold Dark Place is the fourth EP of the US progressive metal - / Sludge - band Mastodon . It was released on September 22, 2017 via Reprise Records .
Emergence
Since spring 2016, the band was working on their seventh album Emperor of sand and took it on unpublished songs from the period of the previous album Once More 'Round the Sun back. At the end of June 2016, guitarist Brent Hinds announced that the song material had developed into a double album . He himself wrote the first part, in which he processed a bad breakup that he had behind him. For this he wrote, according to his own statement, "very dark, melancholy, creepy, strange music" that would sound a little like the Bee Gees . According to Hinds, the four songs on the EP are about life and how much it hurts to be alive.
In January 2017, Hinds announced the album release on the NAMM Show for Record Store Day on April 22, 2017. Emperor of Sand was released as a simple album on March 31, 2017, and there was no further release on Record Store Day. On August 17, 2017, Hinds posted an image through his Instagram account that may have been an album cover, with the comment that new jams will be coming soon. Finally, eleven days later, the release of a four-song EP was announced. The tracks North Side Star , Blue Walsh and Cold Dark Place were taken from the recordings for the album Once More 'Round the Sun and were produced by Nick Raskulinecz , while Toe to Toes was recorded for the recordings for the album Emperor of Sand and was recorded by Brendan O 'Brien had been produced.
Musically, Cold Dark Place differs significantly from Mastodon's previous work. The music sounds calm and melancholy and more acoustic guitars are used. The song Jaguar God was supposed to appear on this EP, but drummer Brann Dailor really wanted Emperor of Sand on the album . The song Blue Walsh was put on the EP for this.

Cold Dark Place was released on September 22, 2017 as a download and on CD . On October 27, 2017 publication follows as a limited 10 " - Picture Disc . Before that, on September 12, 2017, a limited 7 ″ single was released as a supplement for subscribers to the music magazine Revolver . The A side contains the song Toe to Toes , while the B side contains a previously unreleased instrumental version of the song. The cover of the EP and the single of Revolver magazine designed by Richey Beckett.

Reviews
Online magazine ItDjents reviewer Jake noted that the "four distinctly different songs sound so clearly like Mastodon." The EP contains "big riffs , strong songwriting and some of the most progressive gigs to date". The reviewer awarded nine out of ten points and described Toe to Toes as a " catchy tune ". According to the German magazine Metal Hammer, “ Cold Dark Place has a warm, tradition-loving seventies vibe”. Toe to Toes has been described as "one of the band's most melodic feats". The EP was rated six out of seven points. Tobias Kreutzer from the German online magazine Metal.de, on the other hand, said that “the increased vocal part of Brent Hinds would go well with the predominantly calm and melancholy material”, but “the new material would not feel like MASTODON”. It becomes clear that "the magic with Mastodon really comes about in the interaction with each individual band member". Kreutzer awarded seven out of ten points.
Chart placements
Cold Dark Place debuted at number 42 on the US album charts. In Austria the EP reached number 36 and in Switzerland number 44. In Germany, Cold Dark Place missed the charts.
