Once More 'Round the Sun is the sixth studio album by the American progressive metal / sludge band Mastodon . It was released on June 20, 2014 via Reprise Records . The album reached number one on the Finnish album charts. The single High Road was nominated for a Grammy in the category Best Metal Performance .

Emergence

The musicians started working on the new album in autumn 2012. Guitarist Brent Hinds explained in an interview with MTV that he works on eerie, spooky music that is in G minor and is reminiscent of Radiohead . The first work dragged on during a tour break until May 2013, before the band toured through Europe and North America. By then the musicians had finished writing 18 or 19 new songs. The interruption had no negative impact on work , according to drummer Brann Dailor . While writing songs, the musicians were inspired by films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey , Shining and Rosemary's Baby .

The album was produced by Nick Raskulinecz . The band chose him because they liked the sound of Raskulinecz's work with friendly bands like the Deftones , Alice in Chains or Queens of the Stone Age . The recordings began in November 2013 at Rock Falcon Studios in Franklin near Nashville and ended in February 2014. It was the longest development process in the band's history to date. A total of 15 songs were recorded. Scott Kelly from the band Neurosis can be heard again as a guest singer on the song Diamond in the Witch House . The all-female punk band The Coathangers contributed background vocals to the song Aunt Lisa , reminiscent of cheerleading chants . Guest musicians on the song Asleep in the Deep are Vailent Thorr singer Vailent Himself (vocals) and Isaiah Owens ( keyboard ).

The 15 recorded songs had a playing time of around 90 minutes. Of this, around 30 minutes of music was not used on the album, as the band aimed for an album length of one hour . In an interview, singer / bassist Troy Sanders stated that the unused music could be released as an EP . Brann Dailor added that the music intended for the EP would sound darker and contain more elements of Doom Metal than the songs released on the album.

“It just sounds more like winter . That's how we split up the songs. On the album you can find the ones that sound more like summer . Of course you can listen to the album in winter too, but if it comes out now it will rock even more. "

- Brann Dailor

The album cover was designed by the Oakland artist Skinner . The musicians wanted the life and death of gigantic monsters to be depicted on the left and right sides of the cover. Everything in between, is treated in the album cycle of life and death. For the songs High Road , The Mother Load and Asleep in the Deep were music videos rotated. The video for The Motherload earned the band allegations of sexism due to the half-naked women shown in the video dancing twerking .

As with the previous album The Hunter , Once More Round the Sun is not a clear concept album . According to Brann Dailor, the album title describes that great events have happened to him and his bandmates in the past year. Since it was about personal matters, Dailor did not want to comment on it in an interview with Spin magazine , but described the album as a kind of exorcism .

Guitarist Bill Kelliher stated in an interview that the album in bulk was based on the life and experiences of the individual band members in the last year. In 2013 the musicians lost a few people and had to take further downsides such as near death experiences , illnesses or addiction .

“But precisely because it hit us all at the same time, it was cathartic to write about. We did it ourselves from the soul written and left behind. We pooled these bad forces and turned them into something positive. "

- Bill Kelliher

The title of the song Tread Lightly is a reference to the television series Breaking Bad . Aunt Lisa and The Motherload refer to the aunt and mother of Brann Dailor, respectively. The theme song contains a sample of the Thin Lizzy song Cowboy Song . Ember City refers to a situation where Brann Dailor was sitting in the intensive care unit of a hospital next to his mother's bed and didn't know what to do other than write music.
