Live at the Aragon is a live album by the US progressive metal / sludge band Mastodon . The album was released on March 11, 2011 through Reprise Records .

Emergence

For a long time the band had planned to record a concert and publish it as a live album. This opportunity arose on the tour of their album Crack the Skye , released in March 2009 . The choice fell on the concert at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago , where the band performed on October 17, 2009 and was supported by keyboardist Rich Morris. At this concert, the band first played the full album Crack the Skye , three older songs and a cover version of The Bit by the Melvins . The DVD of Live at the Aragon contains the concert the 58-minute film Crack the Skye: The Movie , which during the concert on a screen was projected behind the musicians. The film was produced exclusively for the concert tour. The album was also released on LP and as a download .

Arndt Aldenhoven from Ox-Fanzine was initially disappointed that “the first live release ignored many of the old days”, but also noted that “the prog material, the playful skills and the cinematic background music” of the concert “got him in pull the spell ”and awarded eight out of ten points. Thom Jurek from the online magazine Allmusic criticized the fact that the band “ shows little to no spontaneity or improvisation ” and “the disappointing plain chants” on stage. Jurek recommended focusing on the attached film.

The album debuted at number 71 on the US album charts . In the first week after its release, around 7,000 copies of the album were sold in the United States .
