Curl of the Burl

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Curl of the Burl is a song by the American progressive metal band Mastodon . It is the second single from their fifth studio album The Hunter .

Origin and background

The song was written by guitarist Brent Hinds and drummer Brann Dailor . According to Dailor, the song was created within 20 minutes. According to Dailor, one day Hinds came into the band's rehearsal room in a drunk and stoned state and played the rhythm part of the songs on his guitar . Dailor contributed the melody of the chorus . Since there was a small recording studio in the rehearsal room , a demo recording was made and sent to the producer Mike Elizondo .

With burl ( engl. For nodes ) are outgrowths of diseased trees meant. There are small eddies within these nodes. According to Troy Sanders , many people would saw these knots from the trees and sell the wood to lumber merchants and furniture makers. In the northwestern United States at one time there were many people who would go into the woods with chainsaws , cut those knots, and sell the wood to get the drug crystal meth for the money . A music video was shot for the song that tells the story with B-movie- typical humor. The main actor in the video is Bill Colonel Jr.

The Canadian musician Andrew Baena published in July 2017 Mashup of Curl of the Burl with the song Like a Prayer by Madonna .

reception

Dirk Konz from the online magazine Metalnews described Curl of the Burl as a "catchy and strange song" and made comparisons to Stoner Rock and the band Kyuss . In many other reviews, the song was referred to as a catchy tune or a bang . Michael Rensen from the German magazine Rock Hard, however, rated the song as "unsuccessful". The single reached # 43 on the US Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.

Curl of the Burl was nominated for a Grammy in 2012 in the newly created Best Hard Rock / Metal Performance category. However, the award went to the Foo Fighters . At the Loudwire Music Awards 2011 , Curl of the Burl was nominated in the categories Best Metal Song and Best Video , but the prizes went to Megadeth and Rammstein, respectively .
