The motherload

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Motherload is a song by the American progressive metal band Mastodon . It is the second single taken from her sixth studio album Once More 'Round the Sun .

Origin and background

The song was written by Brent Hinds , Bill Kelliher (both guitar ), Troy Sanders ( bass ) and Brann Dailor ( drums ). Brann Dailor stated in an interview that the song is about his mother, but without being more specific. The song was recorded at Rock Falcon Studios in Franklin near Nashville with producer Nick Raskulinecz . A music video was shot for the song . It was directed by Jonathan Rej and Thomas Bingham from Adult Swim TV . The video shows numerous scantily clad dancers practicing the twerking dance style in slow motion . In this dance style, the hips are moved in a circular and jerky manner.

According to drummer Brann Dailor, the concept of the band was to parody the music videos of metal bands of the early 1990s. According to Dailor, these videos often contained esoteric symbolism. The musicians wanted to "make a strange video that confuses people".

"We're a band that's always looking for things that haven't been tried before, and that's exactly what we did with the video."

reception

Dom Lawson of the British newspaper The Guardian described the song as brilliant, but he thought the music video was sexist . He was "irritated" that Mastodon was bringing metal back to an age where sexist behavior was completely normal. He also didn't want the video to be a kind of satire or parody of hip-hop videos. Drummer Brann Dailor defended the video, which in his opinion shouldn't be taken too seriously.

“I don't see sexism in that. I know there are half-naked women there wiggling their butts. For some people it looks exciting, to me it just looks great. "

The Loudwire Music Awards 2014 was The Mother Load in the category Best Metal Video nominated, but the award went to Slipknot for The Devil in I . The Motherload was nominated in the Metal Anthem category at the Metal Hammer Awards 2015, but the award went to the band Nightwish .
