Twerking [ ˈtwɜrkɪŋ ] is a dance style of circling, jerky hip and pelvic movements with the focus on the buttocks , which are made to vibrate and twitch. It is particularly common in the United States , where it is usually danced to hip-hop , and is considered sexually provocative.

Possible origins

Twerking is often compared to traditional African dances . The term was first used in US hip-hop culture in 1993. Since the early 2000s, twerking has grown in popularity considerably, and it can be seen particularly in music videos. In 2013 the term was added to the Oxford English Dictionary . The dictionary defines Twerking as “ Dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance. "(German:" Dance to pop music in a sexually provocative way with thrusting hip movements and a deep, crouching posture. ")

The exact origin of the term is not known. An often heard explanation sees it as a suitcase word consisting of to twist , 'bend', 'krümmen' and to jerk , 'move in jerks'. However, this is more of a folk etymology ; according to the Oxford Dictionary blog, it is likely a modification of to work with a possible effect of to twist or to twitch .
