Show Yourself is a song by the American progressive metal band Mastodon . It is the second single from their seventh album, Emperor of Sand .

Origin and background

The song was written by guitarist Bill Kelliher and drummer Brann Dailor . Numerous riffs were used for the song , which Kelliher recorded on various tours. Dailor took on the vocals on Show Yourself with bassist Troy Sanders . At first, Dailor was skeptical, finding the main riff of the song too easy to like. After Troy Sanders commented positively on the song, Dailor changed his mind and described the song as an oasis on a tightly packed and intense album. The song was recorded at The Quarry Recording Studio in Kennesaw with producer Brendan O'Brien . With a length of 3:02 minutes, Show Yourself is the shortest song from the album Emperor of Sand .

A music video was shot for the song, directed by Robert Schober. Actor and comedian Brian Posehn made a cameo in the video . The main character of the video is a grim reaper who works as an employee of a large company and is a failure. First an old woman with a walker escapes him, then he loses a chess game with a terminally ill man. Finally, the protagonist and two colleagues are given the task of killing Mastodon's band members. A new hearse beckons to the winner , the last to give notice. However, the protagonist suffers from poor eyesight , so that he only catches people who look similar to the band members. However, a lucky coincidence ensures that the protagonist emerges as the winner of the competition.

On April 3, 2017 Mastodon played the song show Yourself in the ABC - late-night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live! .

reception

According to Frank Thiessies of the German magazine Metal HammerShow Yourself surprises with a previously unheard-of psychedelic hit in the subtle Stone Temple Pilots style”. For Jordan Blum from the online magazine Pop Matters , the song is a “good example of how seamlessly mastodons can transition between ruthless brutality and radio-friendly accessibility”. Rolling Stone magazine's Ryan Reed described Show Yourself as "the most outstanding vocal performance" on the album and "the easiest single in the band's career".

Dennis Drögemüller from the German magazine Visions described the music video as pretty funny and a wonderful costume slapstick clip. Jon Bilstein of Rolling Stone magazine described the video as "hilarious" and highlighted the "interesting contrast" to the main theme of the album, which deals with disease and mortality . Sam Sodomsky from the online magazine Pitchfork Media, however, found the video "silly".

In the Metal Hammer Awards 2017 was show Yourself in the category Metal Anthem nominated. The award went to the band Ghost for the song Square Hammer . The online magazine Revolver voted the music video the best of 2017.
