Kennesaw is a city in Cobb County in the US state of Georgia with 29,783 inhabitants (as of 2010).
geography
Kennesaw is northwest in Cobb County. The neighboring towns are Acworth , Marietta and Woodstock . The next larger city, Marietta, is about 12 kilometers southeast, the capital of Georgia, Atlanta , about 38 kilometers southeast. The urban area extends over an area of 22 km².
history
The city's name is derived from the expression Gah-nee-sah , which means cemetery or burial ground in the Cherokee language . In the 1930s there was a camp for railway workers on the site of the present town. In 1864 the area around the city was the site of the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain , in which General Joseph E. Johnston won a victory for the Confederation .
On May 1, 1982 a city ordinance was passed that stipulates at least one firearm and ammunition for every household. Ignoring the regulation is not a criminal offense.
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the then 29,783 inhabitants were distributed over 11,413 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.59 people per household. There are a total of 12,328 households.
64.6% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.19 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 38.1% of all households and persons aged 65 and over in 14.6% of all households.
29.6% of the population were younger than 20 years, 33.1% were 20 to 39 years old, 26.3% were 40 to 59 years old, and 11.1% were older than 60. The mean age was 32 years. 47.3% of the population were male and 52.7% were female.
64.2% of the population identified themselves as whites , 22.3% as African-Americans , 0.4% as Indians and 5.3% as Asian Americans . 4.7% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 3.0% to several ethnic groups. 10.8% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .
The average annual income per household was 63,756 USD , while 9.6% of the population lived below the poverty line.

Museums
The Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History contains a collection of artifacts related to the Civil War and the history of the railroad in and around Georgia. The most famous exhibit is the locomotive “ The General ”, which was kidnapped by a group of Union soldiers during the Andrews attack in 1862 .
The Depot , a building erected in 1908 near the Southern Museum, was originally a train station . Between 1998 and 2007 the depot was extensively restored by the city and now houses an exhibition of artifacts and photographs related to the history of Kennesaw.
National Battlefield Park
The Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park between Kennesaw and Marietta, which was built in memory of one of the most difficult battles of the Atlanta campaign , is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The park contains, among other things, a memorial for the fallen soldiers as well as restored positions of both armies with original weapons and equipment. The area has an area of 11.69 km² and is administered by the National Park Service (NPS) .
Big Shanty Festival
The annual Big Shanty Festival is one of the largest arts and crafts exhibitions in Georgia. Traditionally, the festival opens with a parade in historical uniforms from the civil war. In 2007, the event, organized by the Kennesaw Business Association, was attended by approximately 55,000 people.
education
Kennesaw has a state university , Kennesaw State University and a college of cosmetology , Cobb Beauty College. There are also four public and three private high schools in the city.
economy
The German mechanical engineering company Heidelberger Druckmaschinen has its US agency in Kennesaw.
