Emergence

In October 2011 Leslie Feist played two songs on the British TV show Later with Jools Holland . The band Mastodon was in the backstage area at the same time and were taken with Feist's voice and had the desire to work with her one day. One day Leslie Feist found out through MTV that Mastodon would like to record a cover version of one of their songs. Leslie Feist agreed and then decided to cover a song by Mastodon.

On a website with song lyrics, Leslie Feist picked out Black Tongue , the first song from Mastodon's album The Hunter . According to Feist, the text would have elementary language that she also uses. She recorded her version during an eight hour layover in Los Angeles . Mastodon, in turn, recorded their version of the song A Commotion , which appeared on Feist's album Metals , during their European tour. According to Mastodon's guitarist Bill Kelliher , the band chose this song because he thought it would stand out.

The split single was originally released on April 21, 2012 on the occasion of Record Store Day . Feistodon was released as a 7 "single , limited to 5,000 copies , which sold out quickly. The single was re-released in digital form on August 1, 2012. At the same time, an interactive video was released that includes both versions of the song A Commotion as a mashup . The listeners could switch back and forth between Feist's and Mastodon's version of the song via a controller.
