Gabriel M. Reyes

Gabriel Martelino Reyes (born March 24, 1892 in Calivo , Capiz ; † October 10, 1952 ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman who was bishop and most recently archbishop of Cebu from 1932 to 1949 and archbishop of Manila from 1949 to 1952 .

Life

Reyes was ordained a priest on March 27, 1915 and appointed Bishop of Cebu on July 29, 1932 to succeed Juan Bautista Gorordo y Perfecto . As such, he received his episcopal ordination on October 11, 1932 by the Apostolic Delegate in the Philippines and titular Archbishop of Velicia Pro hac vice Archbishop Guglielmo Piani SDB , whose co- consecrators were the Bishop of Jaro James Paul McCloskey and the Bishop of Lipa Alfredo Verzosa y Florentin . On April 28, 1934 he became the first Archbishop of Cebu. Subsequently, on August 25, 1949, he was appointed coadjutor of the Archdiocese of Manila and titular Archbishop of Phulli . Then Julio Rosales y Ras succeeded him as Archbishop of Cebu. As archbishop he donated the episcopal ordination on May 24, 1938 to Mariano Madriaga and on September 21, 1940 to John Vrakking MSC .

Less than two months later, on October 13, 1949, he succeeded the late Michael James O'Doherty as Archbishop of Manila . He remained Archbishop of Manila until his death on October 10, 1952, when Rufino Jiao Santos succeeded him.
