Archdiocese of Manila
The Archdiocese of Manila ( Latin : Archidioecesis Manilensis ) includes the cities of Manila , Makati City , Pasay City , Mandaluyong City , Kalookan , parts of Pasig City and Quezon City as well as the boroughs of San Juan , Taguig City , Pateros , Malabon City and Navotas City .
history
The diocese of Manila was founded on February 6, 1579 as a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Mexico under the pontificate of Gregory XIII. founded and on August 14, 1595 elevated to an archbishopric by Clement VIII . The historically best-known priests of the Archdiocese include Jose Burgos and Jacinto Zamora , who went down in the history of the Philippines in the 19th century together with Mariano Gómez as the Gomburza Trio . Archbishop Rufino Jiao Santos was created as the first Filipino cardinal in 1960. A well-known cardinal of the archdiocese was also his successor Jaime Lachica Sin ; he actively supported the EDSA revolution in 1986 , which led to the overthrow of Ferdinand Marcos .
