Jaime Lachica Cardinal Sin (born August 31, 1928 in New Washington , Aklan , Philippines , † June 21, 2005 in Manila ) was Archbishop of Manila from 1974 to 2003 .

Life

Jaime Sin studied philosophy and Catholic theology in Jaro and received on April 3, 1954, the sacrament of Holy Orders . He was then appointed diocesan missionary of the Capiz diocese for three years . From 1957 to 1967 he was the first Regens , dean and lecturer to head the St. Pius X seminary in Roxas City . Pope Paul VI appointed him on February 10, 1967 titular bishop of Obba and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Jaro . He was ordained episcopal by the Bishop of Capiz , Antonio Frondosa , on March 18 of the same year, co-consecrators were Juan Nicolasora Nilmar , coadjutor bishop in the Archdiocese of Davao , and Manuel Sandalo Salvador , auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Cebu .

On January 15, 1972 he was first appointed titular archbishop of Massa Lubrense and coadjutor archbishop in the Archdiocese of Jaro, but on October 8 of the same year he followed his deceased predecessor José Maria Cuenco as pastor of the archdiocese . On January 21, 1974, he was finally appointed Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Manila . Paul VI took Jaime Lachica Sin on May 24, 1976 as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santa Maria ai Monti in the college of cardinals . The conclaves in August and October 1978, he was the youngest participant. From 1977 to 1981 he was chairman of the Philippine Bishops' Conference .

In 1986 he actively supported the EDSA revolution by calling for nonviolent resistance against the advancing troops of Ferdinand Marcos . In addition to his administrative obligations, Jaime L. Sin was actively involved in health care and Caritas matters . He campaigned for ecumenism and was the first Archbishop of the Philippines to invite Protestants as well as Muslims and representatives of other non-Christian denominations for talks.

For health reasons, Sin did not take part in the conclave for the election of Benedict XVI. , the successor of John Paul II .

On June 21, 2005, he died of organ failure at Cardinal Santos Medical Center .
