Quezon City [ ˈkɛson ˈsɪtɪ ] ( Filipino Lungsod Quezon ; German Quezon City ) is the most populous city in the Philippines . It belongs to the Metro Manila region and is located on the main island of Luzón in the immediate vicinity of the capital Manila . Quezon City has a very high population density of around 16,000 inhabitants per square kilometer (comparable to Monaco ). Quezon City was the capital of the Philippines from 1937 to 1976. On June 24, 1976, the metropolitan area of Metro Manila was founded by decree of the then President Ferdinand Marcos , whereby Quezon City was virtually incorporated and replaced as the capital. The new capital became Manila. The city is named after the first president of the Philippines, Manuel Quezon , after whom the province of Quezon is also named. A large park with his monument ( Quezon Memorial Circle ) is dedicated to him in the city . Quezon City is home to various agencies and ministries, the Central Bank of the Philippines (filipino Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas ) and the House of Representatives of the Philippines (Kapulungan ng mga Kinatawan ng Pilipinas) .
The textile industry is one of the most important branches of industry. Tourism is also of economic importance and attempts are being made to attract more companies from the computer sector. Quezon City is home to the University of the Philippines and the Ateneo de Manila University . Quezon City is also the seat of the Diocese of Cubao . In Quezon is the Santo Domingo Church and in this is the shrine of La Naval de Manila , which was declared a national treasure of the Philippines in 2012.
