Jovy Marcelo

Edward Jovy Marcelo (born July 21, 1965 in Quezon City , † May 15, 1992 in Indianapolis , Indiana ) was a Filipino racing car driver . He won the Atlantic Championship in 1991 .

Career

Jovy Marcelo comes from a motorsport family . His father Eddie Marcelo had raced dragsters, motorcycles and motor boats. His brother John Marcelo was also active as a racing car driver and later took part in jet ski races.

Marcelo began his motorsport career at the age of eleven in karting . With the support of his father, he made his debut in formula racing in 1989 . He first competed in the British Formula Vauxhall and in 1990 in the New Zealand Formula Pacific. In 1990 Marcelo also started racing in the United States , where he was studying.

Marcelo first started in the Atlantic Championship . His main focus was on the West series, where he was runner- up behind Mark Dismore . In addition, he also appeared in the Eastern series. In 1991 Marcelo went back to the Atlantic Championship, in which the West and East series had merged from this season on. With victories in Lime Rock and Nazareth , he won one race each on an oval and street circuit. Marcelo won the championship with 157 to 153 points ahead of Jimmy Vasser , who had won six races. In 1992 Marcelo took part in an Atlantic Championship race.

In 1992 , however, Marcelo's main focus was on the Indy Car World Series . He had received a cockpit in a Lola - Cosworth at Euromotorsport . After finishing in 14th place at the season opener in Surfers Paradise , he was eliminated in the next two races and finished in 19th position each time. On May 15, Marcelo had a fatal accident while training for the next race, the Indianapolis 500 . He lost control of his vehicle in turn 1 and hit the barrier with his left side. His death was found in the hospital. Marcelo died of severe head and chest injuries. Marcelo's accident was the third serious accident at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in just a few days. Nelson Piquet sustained severe foot injuries on May 7, and Hiro Matsushita broke his right leg on May 9 .
