The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is a motor sports racetrack in Speedway , United States that is completely enclosed by the city of Indianapolis . The Superspeedway is an oval four kilometers (2.5 miles) long. There is space for 300,000 spectators at the racetrack; it is the largest sports stadium in the United States. The track is the venue for the Indianapolis 500 and the Brickyard 400 . From 2008 to 2014 , the Indianapolis Grand Prix was also held as part of the Motorcycle World Championship . The circuit was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987 .
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the older and larger of the two major motorsport facilities in Indianapolis, next to the Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis, only twelve kilometers (7.5 mi ) away .
history
The Indiana entrepreneur Carl Graham Fisher , himself an avid racing driver, had been concerned with the "necessity of a" test route of three to five miles "since 1903. He was supported by Frederick E. Moskovics , the managing director of the Indianapolis car maker Marmon .
The first circuit built specifically for car racing in the United States was first used in August 1909. The road, which was then paved with gravel and tar , caused some fatal accidents for both the drivers and the spectators. The race was stopped halfway through the race distance. Fisher was then the race track with 3.2 million bricks ( bricks renovate). On May 30, 1911, the Indianapolis 500 could take place for the first time . The first winner was Ray Harroun on Marmon Wasp with an average speed of 120.060 km / h.
In 1935 there were 15 accidents which resulted in the brick surface being replaced with asphalt patches. The reputation of the Indy 500 rose so far that the race was part of the Formula 1 World Championship from 1950 to 1960 .
In the 1960s, the brick surface was completely replaced by asphalt except for a three- foot (one yard ) wide strip at the start and finish lines, which earned the oval the name The Brickyard .
On March 7, 1975, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a Landmark and Historic District .
In 1989, the former Formula 1 driver Emerson Fittipaldi drove the highest speed with 350 km / h, a year later Arie Luyendyk won with an average speed of 299.307 km / h.
An infield track was created for Formula 1 in 1998 . It is driven on part of the oval and then back through the middle of the oval. Unlike the oval course, however, the infield track is driven clockwise, which corresponds to the conventions of most other Formula 1 tracks. In 2005, a new asphalt pavement caused a scandal in Formula 1. The Grand Prix was only driven by the six Bridgestone- tyred cars after the tires with Michelin tires repeatedly suffered tire damage in the training runs and Michelin supplied them Teams recommended that the race be canceled for safety reasons.
On July 17, 2007 it was announced that races of the motorcycle world championship will also be held on the track in the infield from the 2008 season with the Indianapolis Grand Prix . The Formula 1 track is to be driven in the opposite direction and in a slightly different form.
On November 4, 2019, Hulman & Company announced the sale of its business, including the sale of Indianapolis Motor Speedway, to Roger Penske ( Penske Corporation ).
