description

Shanghai International Circuit

The race track is one of the many prestige objects of the Chinese, who want to use it to demonstrate their technical know-how and their economic creativity worldwide. It is located around 25 km northwest of the center of Shanghai and has some special features. On the one hand, it offers one of the most modern paddocks of all current Formula 1 courses, which is closely adapted to the Chinese architectural style of the area. On the other hand, the German architect Hermann Tilke built what is known as the “snail curve”. It is based on the construction of a snail shell and therefore increasingly narrows its curve radius. Otherwise, the route - like almost all modern courses - is very broad and lined with wide open spaces. This should keep the risk of accidents as low as possible.

Because the subsoil of the racetrack consisted to a large extent of soft sediment and swamp, a large amount of polystyrene had to be used during construction so that the track "floats up" and does not sag. According to Tilke, the Chinese market was “bought short” in order to realize the project. The system thus represents a milestone in civil engineering and architecture .

Furthermore, due to the marshy soil, around 43,000 pile foundations had to be laid across the entire facility and around 80 drilling rigs had to be used. In order to drain the carriageway quickly and reliably even in heavy rainfalls, large reservoirs were created near the paddock, which can be filled with rainwater if necessary.

According to the operator, the design of the course was based on the shape of the Chinese character shàng  - "upwards, upwards", which also occurs in the city name Shànghăi ( 上海  - "up to the sea").
