training
In the first free practice, world champion Lewis Hamilton achieved his first practice best time of the season. The Brawn drivers Button and Barrichello followed in second and third place. In the second Friday practice, Button secured the fastest time ahead of Nico Rosberg and Barrichello. In the third free practice, Rosberg set the fastest lap ahead of Jarno Trulli and Hamilton.
Qualifying
In the first qualifying stage, Button achieved the fastest lap ahead of his teammate Barrichello. The Force India pilots, Kubica , Piquet and Bourdais were eliminated. In the second segment, the Red Bull drivers were dominant and Sebastian Vettel set the fastest lap ahead of Mark Webber . Nakajima , Glock , Massa , Kovalainen and Heidfeld were eliminated. In the final qualifying stage, Vettel secured the second pole position of his career ahead of Fernando Alonso and Webber.
run
The race started at 3 p.m. CNST due to heavy rain and a correspondingly wet track behind the safety car . During the safety car phase, some drivers went to their pits because they did not have enough fuel on board. At the end of the safety car phase, after the end of the eighth lap, the Red Bull cars had a one-two lead that differed from the starting grid, as Alonso had lost second place due to his pit stop.
After the flying start, Hamilton pulled past Kimi Raikkonen , who was temporarily off the track, and overtook Trulli two laps later. The Red Bull drivers confidently led the race and were followed by the Brawn drivers. After Barrichello had initially occupied third place, he had to give up this position to his teammate after an excursion off the track. Like Hamilton before, Sébastien Buemi also overtook Raikkonen and Trulli. A little later, Massa also passed the two of them. In the back of the field there was a collision between Heidfeld and Glock, but both were able to continue. After Hamilton made a driving mistake, he fell behind Raikkonen and there were several position changes between the two.
After Vettel and Webber made their first pit stop, there was a brawn double lead with Button at the top. However, the two Brawn drivers could not take advantage of their heavy car, as the safety car came out again after a collision between Trulli and Kubica. During the safety car phase, some drivers, including Button and Barrichello, took the opportunity and made a pit stop. For Massa, who had worked his way up to third place, the race was over after 21 laps due to a technical defect.
In the middle of the race, Vettel was able to extend his lead in front of Button. Button was overtaken twice by Webber within four laps, giving Red Bull a one-two lead. The two Red Bull drivers were able to defend this one-two lead against Brawn drivers Button and Barrichello after the second pit stops.
Force India driver Adrian Sutil had worked his way up to seventh place in the course of the race and thus had a good chance of scoring points. However, he lost control of his car without outside interference and retired. Sutil was unharmed. Although parts were on the track, the safety car did not come out this time. In the end, Vettel won the race ahead of his teammate Webber and thus ensured the first Red Bull victory, which was also a one-two. Third place went to Button, who was able to stay ahead of his teammate Barrichello until the end of the race. The other points went to Kovalainen, Hamilton, Glock and Buemi.
At the award ceremony that followed, there was a faux pas on the part of those responsible when the British national anthem was played instead of the Austrian national anthem for Red Bull Racing.
Button extended his lead in the drivers' standings ahead of team-mate Barrichello. Vettel improved to third place.
With Sebastian Vettel, another driver won for the sixth time in a row.
