Reports

background

After the Brazilian Grand Prix , Jenson Button led the drivers' standings with 15 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel and 17 points ahead of Rubens Barrichello . Brawn- Mercedes also led unassailable in the constructors' championship with 25.5 points ahead of Red Bull- Renault and with 90 points ahead of McLaren- Mercedes.

Timo Glock was again represented by Kamui Kobayashi .

training

In the first free practice, McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton took the lead in front of Button and Vettel. It was the Briton's tenth fastest time in training. In the second practice session on Friday, Heikki Kovalainen was the fastest driver. His team-mate Hamilton took second place. Third was Button. In the third free practice, which was the last practice of the season, World Champion Button drove the fastest lap and was only two thousandths of a second faster than Hamilton. Button's team-mate Barrichello followed in third place.

Qualifying

In the first section, Hamilton took the lead. The Renault and Force India pilots as well as Giancarlo Fisichella were eliminated. Hamilton also achieved the fastest lap in the second section. However, his team suffered a setback as his teammate Kovalainen was out. In addition to the Finn, Alguersuari , Nakajima , Kobayashi and Räikkönen did not make the leap into the third section, which was also dominated by Hamilton. The Briton secured pole position with a lead of almost seven-tenths of a second over Vettel . Mark Webber started the race from third place.

run

Hamilton started the race well and maintained his lead over Vettel and Webber. In fourth and fifth place, Button overtook his team-mate Barrichello, who had slightly damaged his front wing in a collision with Webber. Contrary to all expectations, Hamilton was unable to distance himself from the two Red Bulls, and he was the first of the leading trio to pit with about a second ahead.

Newcomer Kamui Kobayashi scored championship points in his second race

At the same time as Hamilton, World Champion Button completed his pit stop and came back on track before Kobayashi. The young Japanese, who had already overtaken Raikkonen on the first lap, was unable to keep the button behind. Two laps after Hamilton's pit stop, Vettel also had to complete his stop. The German managed to get back on track several seconds before Hamilton and take the lead.

Sebastian Vettel won the first Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Newcomer Alguersuari caused a curious retirement: the Toro Rosso driver accidentally drove into the Red Bull Racing pit and had to park his car with an empty tank on the following lap. One lap later, Hamilton had to give up with braking problems. After the first stops had been completed, Vettel led the race in front of his team-mate Webber. In third place was Kobayashi, who started the race with a one-stop strategy.

Until the last pit stops, Vettel was able to extend his lead over his team-mate and thus secure his lead. Since Webber also had to pit before Vettel, Vettel's leadership was not in danger.

In the final phase of the race there was a duel for second place between Webber and Button, which Webber ultimately won. Vettel won the last race of the season and thus secured victory in the runner-up world championship. Further points went to Barrichello, Heidfeld , Kobayashi, Trulli and Buemi .
