Jaime Víctor Alguersuari Escudero [ ˈxaime alɣerˈswaɾi ] (born March 23, 1990 in Barcelona ) is a former Spanish racing driver . He became British Formula 3 champion in 2008 . He started for Toro Rosso in Formula 1 from 2009 to 2011 . In 2014/15 he competed in the FIA Formula E Championship .

Career

Alguersuari began his motorsport career in 1998 in kart racing , in which he remained active until 2005. He won the Copa Campeones Junior Trophy in 2003 and 2004. In 2004 he won the Spanish Junior ICA Championship and was seventh in the European Junior ICA Championship. In 2005 he won the Spanish ICA Kart Championship and was runner-up in the Asia-Pacific ICA Kart Championship.

In 2005 Alguersuari began his career in formula racing . He competed for Tomcat Racing in the Italian Formula Renault 1.6 and was third in the overall classification. With 160 to 268 points he was defeated by his teammate Pasquale Di Sabatino , who won the championship. In addition, Alguersuari completed two races in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup for Epsilon Euskadi as a guest starter . In 2006 he switched to Cram Competition and competed in two championships. A second place in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup was his best result and he was twelfth in the drivers' championship. He lost to his teammate Edoardo Piscopo with 24 to 34 points. In the Italian Formula Renault, Alguersuari finished tenth with third place as the best result, while his teammates Piscopo and Adrian Zaugg took third and second place. At the end of the year, Alguersuari also competed in the winter series of the Italian Formula Renault. In this he won all four races and won the championship. In 2007 Alguersuari stayed in the two racing series and competed for Epsilon Red Bull . His teammates were Brendon Hartley and Mika Mäki . While Hartley won the Eurocup, Mäki won the Italian Formula Renault. Alguersuari finished fifth in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup with two second places as the best results and second in the Italian Formula Renault with three wins.

Alguersuari in the 2008 British Formula 3 Championship

In 2008 Alguersuari received a cockpit from Carlin in the British Formula 3 championship . He won five races and was the youngest overall winner. He won against his teammates Oliver Turvey (234 points) and Hartley (208 points) with 251 points . In addition, Alguersuari contested eight Spanish Formula 3 races for GTA Motor Competición , of which he won three. He also took part in Formula 1 test drives for Red Bull Racing .

In 2009 Alguersuari stayed with Carlin. Together with Turvey, he switched to Formula Renault 3.5 . He won a race in Portimão and came third twice. With a win he finished sixth in the overall standings at the end of the season. With 88 to 93 points he was just under Turvey internally. In addition, Alguersuari made his Formula 1 debut in 2009 . After he was first one of three test drivers for Red Bull Racing, he was signed in mid-July to replace Sébastien Bourdais from Red Bull's sister team, Scuderia Toro Rosso . With his start at the Hungarian Grand Prix , Alguersuari became the youngest starter in a Formula 1 race. He was 19 years and 125 days old at his first Grand Prix. In eight races he was eliminated five times. A 14th place was his best result. He finished the season in 24th place overall.

Alguersuari scored his first points in Formula 1 at the 2010 Malaysian Grand Prix

For the 2010 season , Alguersuari stayed with Toro Rosso. After keeping Michael Schumacher behind for a long time in the second race in Australia and finally finishing eleventh, one race later he scored his first points in ninth place at the Malaysian Grand Prix . Later in the season he scored points in two other races. He finished the drivers' championship in 19th place. With five to eight points he was internally defeated by Sébastien Buemi .

In 2011 Alguersuari and Buemi competed for Toro Rosso again. After six races without points, his first points followed with two eighth places at the Canadian and European Grand Prix . At the Italian Grand Prix he achieved his best result in Formula 1 with a seventh place, which he repeated at the Korean Grand Prix . Within the team, he prevailed against Buemi with 26 to 15 points and improved to 14th place in the world championship. After the season, Toro Rosso decided to swap the driver duo for the coming season. Alguersuari had previously refused negotiations with other racing teams out of loyalty to his long-term sponsor Red Bull.

In 2012 Alguersuari took on the role of test driver at the tire manufacturer Pirelli . He also held this position in 2013. In formula racing, he did not complete any races in either year. Instead, Alguersuari took part in kart races. In 2013 he was ninth in the CIK-FIA-KZ-Kart World Championship.

In 2014 Alguersuari started again in races. First he took part in GT racing for Rowe Racing in five of eight ADAC GT Masters events. He was 29th in the drivers' championship. In addition, Alguersuari competed for Virgin Racing in the newly founded FIA Formula E Championship in the 2014/15 season . In the second race, the Putrajaya ePrix , he achieved his first top 10 and points with a ninth place. In addition, he received the bonus points for the fastest race lap. After the penultimate race in Moscow Alguersuari lost due to dehydration and fatigue that momentarily consciousness . As a result, his racing license was temporarily suspended and he decided not to start at the London ePrix for safety reasons . In the overall standings he reached 13th place overall. Two months after the Moscow ePrix, Alguersuari announced that, for health reasons , he would have to forego the FIA Formula E Championship 2015/16 .

On October 1, 2015, Alguersuari announced the end of his career.

Alguersuari is also active as a DJ . His stage name is Squire . In September 2011 he released his first album called Organic Life .
