history

Mario Romancini in the World Series by Renault by Epsilon Euskadi 2008

At the end of the 1990s, Michel Lecomte founded a motorsport team under the name Epsilon . It was involved in the young Open Telefónica by Nissan and won the series with Franck Montagny in 2001. As a result of the successes, Lecomte came into contact with the Basque Ander Vilariño , who earned him both sponsorship and the goodwill of the local authorities. Lecomte founded the new company Epsilon Euskadi at the end of 2003 and moved to its current location in 2004. The new addition to the name Euskadi stands for this region in the Basque language and was a condition for the authorities to support the “technological innovation center” developed by the racing team. In return, young engineers are trained in cooperation with a university. In 2005, the now renamed team returned to the former Nissan Formula Championship. In the series now named World Series by Renault , the team won both the driver's title with Robert Kubica and the team championship.

Founder Lecomte left Epsilon Euskadi and implemented a joint project with Juan Barazi in 2006 under the name Barazi-Epsilon. Barazi and Michael Vergers competed together with a Le Mans prototype in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and in the Le Mans Series . At the end of the season, Barazi-Epsilon won both the team and the drivers' championship in the LMP2 class. For the 2008 season , the Basque racing team now led by Joan Villadelprat followed suit. With the Epsilon Euskadi ee1 , the company has now developed a Le Mans prototype itself and registered two vehicles in the Le Mans 24-hour race and the Le Mans Series. In 2008, Villadelprat commented on the decision as follows:

“To receive media coverage in motor sport there's only F1, Indianapolis or Le Mans. The first require resources that we haven't got; the second excites little media interest in Europe contrary to a Le Mans car that we can afford in terms resources. "

“To get media attention in motorsport, there are only F1, Indianapolis or Le Mans. The first option requires resources that we don't have; the second receives hardly any media attention in Europe, in contrast to a Le Mans vehicle that we can afford in terms of resources. "

However, the car proved to be prone to errors in the first season, so that Epsilon Euskadi only finished the team championship in penultimate place. In early 2009 it was announced that Epsilon Euskadi was planning to compete in sports car racing again. Among other things, the driver was Jos Verstappen . However, the team did not compete in Le Mans or the Le Mans Series. Ultimately, the team concentrated on their two main series - the World Series by Renault and the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup , in which Albert Costa emerged as the championship winner.

In June 2009 the information came to the public that Epsilon Euskadi had registered for the 2010 Formula 1 season . However, the team was not taken into account by the FIA for the new starting places allocated for this season .

In April 2010, Epsilon Euskadi competed alongside Durango and Stefan Grand Prix for 13th place on the grid in the 2011 Formula 1 season . In September 2010, however, the FIA decided not to allow another team for the following season.

At the beginning of 2011 EPIC Racing took over the Formula Renault teams from Epsilon Euskadi.
