Ander Vilariño Facal (born November 6, 1979 in Hondarribia ) is a Spanish racing driver .

Life

Vilariño was born in 1979 to the Spanish racing driver Andrés Vilariño and his wife Mari Carmen Facal . He grew up in the world of racing in Spain and Europe accompanied by his parents. His father was involved in several national and international championships and won several mountain championships.

Racing

At the age of 8 he was already driving kart races in the junior class Copa de España Alevín (8 to 11 years) in Spain, at 15 he became Spanish kart champion of the A Inter category (Campeonato de España KF3) and switched from karting to in 1996 the Formula Renault .

In 2000 he switched to the Spanish Formula SuperToyota and became Spanish champion (Campeón de España de Fórmula Supertoyota) in Montmelo on the Circuito de Barcelona-Cataluña . A year later, thanks to his spectacular season with the Racing Engineering team , he became the first Formula 3 champion in Spain: He achieved 6 victories in the season.

In 2002 Ander Vilariño drove in the Nissan World Series for the French team Epsilon by Graff . In his first season he was named "Rookie" (best newcomer of the year) after he had achieved two podiums and one pole position, among others against former prominent Formula 1 drivers. In 2003 he had two wins, 5 podiums and two pole positions in the Nissan World Series .

In 2005 he became European mountain champion (Copa de Europa de Montaña FIA) and was only able to repeat this success in 2007. At the first run of 2006 in the Austrian Rechbergrennen he had such a serious accident in his Formula 3000 Reynard that he had to end the season. Then he became the first European champion in the NASCAR series. In 2012 he was awarded by the Spanish racing association Real Federación Española de Automovilismo .

In 2013, Vilariño was the first Spanish driver to drive a NASCAR race in Daytona Beach / USA. In the same year he became European champion of the NASCAR series for the second time in a row with a new record of 7 wins, 8 pole positions and 8 fastest laps. On December 14, 2013, Ander Vilariño was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, USA.
