The course record for this 4 km long course was set by Erich Breinsberg with 2: 02.87 minutes. The race was used for the evaluation of the Austrian Mountain Championship. In 1981 a European hill climb championship run took place on the track for the first time and the course record was improved by Michel Pignard to 1: 47.36 minutes.
In 1987 the start was moved to the current location in Tulwitz and the route length increased to 4.5 km. Walter Pedrazza from Vorarlberg set the course record with 2: 08.25 minutes for the new route. In 1988 the route was extended again by relocating the finish line to the top of the pass to the length of 5050 m prescribed by the international association. The average gradient is now 5.3% and the course record was set by Herbert Stenger with 2: 09.85 minutes.
At the 30th anniversary of the Rechberg race in 2002, Josef (Seppi) Neuhauser ( Minardi Formula 1 ) broke the 2-minute barrier for the first time with 1: 59.529 minutes . Since 2014, the course record is 1:55:366, set by Simone Faggioli on an Osella FA 30.
During training on April 25, 2015, the Czech hillclimb driver Otakar Kramsky got off the track with his formula car on the straight in front of the VIP grandstand and collided with a tree, suffering fatal injuries. Further training runs that day were canceled. On Sunday, after a training run, the race was run in just one round, with the Italian Simone Faggioli winning for the sixth time in a row. Second place went to David Hauser from Luxembourg, ahead of Christian Schweiger from Austria.
