Reports

background

After the Japanese Grand Prix , Mark Webber led the drivers' standings with 14 points ahead of Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel . Red Bull-Renault led the constructors' championship with 45 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes and with 92 points ahead of Ferrari .

training

In the first free practice session, Lewis Hamilton set the fastest lap ahead of Robert Kubica and Nico Rosberg . At Virgin-Cosworth , Jérôme D'Ambrosio took over the cockpit from Lucas di Grassi . In the second free practice session, Webber took the lead in front of Alonso and Hamilton. In the third free practice, Kubica was the fastest driver ahead of Hamilton and Alonso.

Qualifying

In the first qualifying segment, Hamilton was the fastest driver. The HRT , Virgin and Lotus pilots as well as Vitantonio Liuzzi were eliminated. In the second section, Webber took over the leadership position. The Toro Rosso and Sauber pilots as well as Vitali Petrow , Adrian Sutil and Nico Hülkenberg were eliminated. In the third section, Vettel achieved the fastest time for pole position . His team-mate Webber came second ahead of Alonso.

run

Starting line-up in midfield

The start of the Korean Grand Prix was initially postponed by ten minutes due to rain and finally took place behind the safety car . Since several pilots complained that they could no longer see the vehicle in front of them, the race management decided to interrupt the race after three laps with the red flag. During the break, Mercedes took the chance to adapt the car to the wet weather conditions. After about 49 minutes, the Grand Prix resumed behind the safety car. The pilots reported that the conditions had improved somewhat. However, it took until the 18th lap to open the race.

When the race restarted, both Mercedes drivers benefited from their changed setup. Michael Schumacher overtook Kubica and Rosberg passed Hamilton, who had previously complained over the pit radio about the delay in being allowed to race. Vettel benefited from the clear view and set himself apart from his team-mate Webber. After some vehicles had already turned in the back of the field, Webber also lost control of his vehicle when driving over a curb. He spun, hit the barrier and collided with Rosberg while rolling back onto the track. The race was over for both drivers and there was another safety car phase. The safety car phase was used by some drivers in the back of the field to switch to intermediate tires.

At the restart there were no shifts at the front of the field. There was another retirement in the rear section as Jarno Trulli had to retire due to a collision with Bruno Senna . Di Grassi also had to retire after an accident at this stage of the race. After Schumacher drove past Button, the McLaren driver decided to switch to intermediates. However, he made his pit stop at an inopportune time and fell behind a larger group of drivers who were all on intermediate tires.

Scene from the race

During the battle for twelfth position, Sébastien Buemi tried to drive past Timo Glock . Buemi collided with Glock and lost his left front wheel. The race was over for both of them after this incident. Since Buemi could no longer drive his car, the safety car had to go out again. Glock made it to the pits, but did not restart the race. In the safety car phase, all drivers except Vettel and Alonso, who had already driven past the pits, decided to switch to intermediates. Kubica almost collided with a Force India in the pit lane when he stopped. A lap later, Vettel and Alonso also stopped. While Vettel's stop went without any problems, one of Alonso's mechanics lost a wheel nut and his stop was delayed by a few seconds, so that he fell behind Hamilton.

However, Hamilton did not hold the position in front of Alonso for long: When restarting, he braked himself in the first corner and Alonso pulled past him again and took second place behind Vettel. The two leading drivers broke away from the rest of the field. On lap 39, Petrov came off the track in the last corner and hit the boundary. His car was completely destroyed. He was unharmed. Until his accident, Petrov was in front of his teammate Kubica. This time, however, the safety car never came out again.

Lewis Hamilton out and about on rain tires

After Vettel had complained over the radio about too dark lighting conditions and Hamilton had said that the light was okay, Vettel slowed down. A little later he stopped with an engine failure. For Red Bull-Renault there was a double retirement after the team had initially led the race with both cars. Alonso took the lead from Hamilton. A little later there was a collision between Sutil and Kamui Kobayashi . While Kobayashi drove on, the race was over for Sutil, who had damaged a wheel suspension.

As the track continued to dry out, some riders had problems with their intermediates and spun. At the front, however, all the drivers were able to finish the race in a controlled manner.

Eventually Alonso won his fifth race of the season ahead of Hamilton and his teammate Felipe Massa . Schumacher benefited from his rain settings and crossed the finish line in fourth place ahead of Kubica. Liuzzi achieved his best result of the season with a sixth place. The remaining points went to Rubens Barrichello , Kobayashi, Nick Heidfeld and Hülkenberg.

With his win, Alonso took the lead in the World Championship from Webber, who dropped to second place. Hamilton finished third. In the constructors' championship, the positions remained unchanged, but the gaps narrowed as Red Bull-Renault remained without points.
