Bruno Senna Lalli (born October 15, 1983 in São Paulo ) is a Brazilian racing car driver and nephew of the three-time Formula 1 world champion Ayrton Senna . He was runner-up in the GP2 series in 2008 and competed in Formula 1 from 2010 to 2012 . In 2013 he drove in the FIA World Endurance Championship . From 2014 to 2016 he competed in the FIA Formula E Championship .

Career

Beginnings in motorsport

Because of the tragic accidental death of his prominent uncle, Ayrton Senna , in 1994 and the death of his father in a motorcycle accident in 1996, Senna suppressed the desire for a racing career in his youth. It was not until the age of twenty that he revealed his plans to his mother Viviane , Ayrton Senna's sister and chairman of the Instituto Ayrton Senna .

Like his uncle Ayrton, Bruno Senna began his career in the UK without ever having driven a car race in Brazil. However, the preconditions for his career were fundamentally different: unlike his uncle, Senna had no experience in karting because he was already too old for that at the beginning of his active career. Private training sessions with his uncle at the age of five were the only basis for Senna's first laps in a Formula BMW in Great Britain. But his talent was evident and his family agreed to a few test races.

Former Formula 1 driver Gerhard Berger , who was a close friend of Ayrton Senna, chose a Formula BMW cockpit for Trevor Carlin's experienced Carlin team for his debut . Senna started six races. He also took part in a race in the Asian Formula Renault Challenge as a guest starter. He reached the goal within the first three pilots. At the end of 2004, Senna was allowed to drive a few laps with a former racing car of his uncle on the occasion of the Formula 1 Brazilian Grand Prix in Interlagos .

Formula 3

Bruno Senna 2006 in British Formula 3

Because Senna in 2004 was already 21 years old and first in the Formula BMW experience in Formula racing had collected, advised him Gerhard Berger, a full season in the British Formula 3 Championship to complete and he received a cockpit at Double R Racing , the team of Formula 1 driver Kimi Raikkonen . Already in his debut race he reached sixth place. After the middle of the season he achieved a second starting place at Silverstone and with third place in the race the first podium place. A little later he achieved his first pole position at the Nürburgring and finished the race in second. At the final run in Silverstone he took another second place. After his first full season in motorsport, he had three podium positions and one pole position with 22 starts and tenth place overall with 75 points. He lost to his teammate Dan Clarke , who was fifth with 160 points. However, in contrast to Senna, Clarke already had some experience in formula racing.

Senna also competed in the 2006 season in British Formula 3 for Raikkonen Robertson Racing. Already at the start in Oulton Park Senna achieved the first victory after he had already won the qualification. Senna also won the second and third races and thus initially led the undisputed rankings. At the end of the season he had to give up in the fight for the title but Mike Conway , who was also his teammate, and he was third in the championship with five wins. He lost the duel with 250 to 321 points. In 2006 he also competed in one race each in the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany and the Porsche Supercup, as well as in four races in the Australian Formula 3, three of which he won.

GP2 series

Bruno Senna in the 2008 GP2 Series at Silverstone

For the 2007 season, Senna switched to the GP2 series , where he started for the Arden International team . On the second race weekend he had his first win in Barcelona , but it was the only one of the season. In the end, Senna had 34 points and was eighth overall. Internally, he prevailed clearly against Adrian Zaugg , who had scored 10 points.

After the end of the season he moved to the reigning championship team iSport International and became a teammate of the Indian Karun Chandhok . Both drivers initially competed in the first season of the GP2 Asia series . Senna reached two second places and finished fifth overall. In 2008 , Senna stayed with Chandhok at iSport in the regular GP2 series . In Monaco he won his second GP2 race. The victory received worldwide attention, as Senna had triumphed exactly 15 years to the day after his uncle's last success in Monaco. In the further course of the season it became clear that Senna had championship chances. He collected a total of six podium places and won one more time, but lost in the final to the Italian Giorgio Pantano by nine points.

In November 2008, Senna completed the first test drives for the Formula 1 team of the Japanese car manufacturer Honda - with the aim of getting a racing cockpit for 2009. He achieved better times overall than his compatriot and direct competitor Lucas di Grassi . After Honda's surprising withdrawal at the end of 2008, the Brawn GP successor team decided against Senna and Rubens Barrichello a few weeks before the start of the 2009 season ; afterwards he was associated with a DTM entry and completed his first test drives there for Mercedes in March 2009. Ultimately, however, there was no commitment for the 2009 DTM season .

Le Mans Series

After various contract negotiations that had failed, Senna signed with the French racing team ORECA and competed in the Le Mans Series in the 2009 season . At the side of Stéphane Ortelli , he finished the first run of the year in the top three. At the 1000 km race in Spa , however, Senna had a serious accident in the bus stop chicane , but got out of the ORECA 01 on its own. The Ortelli / Senna team was also reinforced by Tiago Monteiro for the Le Mans 24-hour race . After a few problems with the vehicle, the trio fell behind in the race and was given up in favor of the sister vehicle placed in the top 5. Monteiro now tackled his home race in Algarve together with Senna. As in the opening race in Spain, Senna finished the championship run on the podium. After that, the team split up the vehicles in order to compete in the American Le Mans Series , Asian Le Mans Series and the last race of the Le Mans Series. In return, however, ORECA only entered one Le Mans prototype per race weekend and so Senna was denied another race start this season.

formula 1

Senna in HRT at the 2010 Canadian Grand Prix

At the end of October 2009 it was officially announced that Senna should start in the 2010 season for the Spanish team Campos Grand Prix in Formula 1. However, Campos was sold a few weeks before the end of the season and Senna was signed on by the HRT successor team . At HRT, he met Karun Chandhok again , who became his teammate. His former iSport team boss Paul Jackson praised the team for this driver choice, as the two drivers had been very committed to the team during their joint GP2 season. After being eliminated from the first two races due to technical defects, he crossed the finish line for the first time in 16th place at the Malaysian Grand Prix . At the British Grand Prix he was replaced once by Sakon Yamamoto . At the next Grand Prix, Yamamoto replaced Chandhok. In the further course of the season he got another teammate in Christian Klien . At the end of the season, Senna took 14th place as the best result, 23rd place overall.

After Senna had not received a regular cockpit for the 2011 season , he became a test driver at Renault . In this role he took part in a Friday training session in Hungary . At the subsequent Grand Prix in Belgium , he finally replaced Nick Heidfeld as a driver. In his second race in Italy , he scored his first and only points in Formula 1 in ninth place. At the end of the season he was 18th in the world championship.

In 2012 Senna switched to Team Williams , for which his uncle Ayrton had already started. He replaced his compatriot Rubens Barrichello there. At the second race, the Malaysian Grand Prix , he achieved his best result to date with sixth place, which remained his best result of the season. Senna drove regularly into the points and finished the season in 16th place. Internally, he lost to Pastor Maldonado , who had won a race, with 31 to 45 points.

Endurance World Championship

In 2013 Bruno Senna left Formula 1. He switched to the FIA World Endurance Championship and started for Aston Martin Racing . He competed in every race, but was not permanently assigned to any vehicle. It was used in a total of four vehicles. Senna won the GT class at Silverstone and Austin and won the GTE-Am class at Fuji . He finished the GT Drivers' World Cup in eighth place.

Formula E.

In 2014/15 Senna competed for Mahindra Racing in the newly established FIA Formula E Championship . Chandhok is his teammate again. In the first race, the Beijing ePrix , Senna was eliminated in a starting collision. In the second ePrix in Putrajaya , Senna did not finish either. This time he had an accident in the final lap while in the top 10. In the third race, the Punta del Este ePrix , he achieved his first top 10 finish with sixth place. At the end of the season he finished tenth overall. In 2015/16 Senna competed again for Mahindra in Formula E. In London he achieved a podium finish in second place. He finished the season with 52 points in eleventh place overall, one point and one position behind his teammate Heidfeld. After the season, Senna left Mahindra Racing.
