The 26th 1000 km race of Spa-Francorchamps , also 1000 KM of Spa (Le Mans Series), Spa-Francorchamps , took place on May 10, 2009 in Spa-Francorchamps and was the second round of the Le Mans Series of this year .

The race

In 2009, the works teams from Peugeot and Audi largely refrained from participating in the Le Mans Series. While the Joest team the new Audi R15 TDI in the American Le Mans Series began, the Peugeot team focused almost exclusively on the 24-hour race at Le Mans , where they finally wanted to create the overall victory with a double victory also import . The endurance race on the Spa circuit served the French team as preparation for the 24-hour race in western France.

In qualifying training, the guest starters from Peugeot secured the front row, with Simon Pagenaud in the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP with the number 7 and Alexander Wurz in the car with the number 9 only 27/1000 seconds apart. Paugenaud lapped the course in a time of 2: 01.056 minutes. The fastest lap times in the LMP2 and GT1 class also went to guest starters with Casper Elgaard in the Porsche RS Spyder Evo and Alexander Müller in the Aston Martin DBR9 . In the GT2, Marc Lieb , who drove a Porsche 997 GT3 RSR , drove to the top of his category and finished his best lap with 2: 21.870 minutes.

On the first lap there was a collision between Darren Turner in the Lola Aston Martin DBR1 and Jean-Christophe Boullion in the Pescarolo 01 from Henri Pescarolo's team , which threw both cars back to the end of the field. Right from the start, the two Peugeot vehicles led in front of the factory Oreca 01 with Bruno Senna at the wheel. 10 minutes after the start of the race, Senna had to go to the pit with a burst tire. Since there were a lot of rubber parts on the track, the safety car had to go out onto the slopes. After the restart, David Brabham collided with the Ibanez Racing LMP2 in the second-placed Peugeot. Brabham had to pit for repairs and later received a stop-and-go penalty for pushing the competitor away. A few minutes later Bruce Jouanny hit the road barrier in the second factory Pescarolo in the Raidillon and damaged the car considerably. The safety car was used again.

At half time, Simon Pagenaud led the Peugeot. The accident of a GT2 Ferrari brought the safety car onto the track again, but this did not affect the overall victory. Simon Pagenaud, Nicolas Minassian and Christian Klien won with a start-to-finish victory for Peugeot.
