The Panmure Shipyard is a former shipyard in the Scottish city ​​of Dundee in the council area of the same name . In 1989 the former workshops were included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. Another preserved complex, however, is classified as a Category B building. The buildings have meanwhile been converted into apartments.

history

The shipyard was founded in 1837 by David Calman . The buildings were designed by the Scottish engineer James Leslie , who had previously gained experience building docks in London and Leith (now part of Edinburgh ). In 1844 Alexander Stephen and Sons took over the shipyard and held it until 1894. During this time, 168 ships made of wood or steel were built there. After the death of William Stephen , the Dundee Shipbuilders Company bought the Panmure Shipyard. In 1901 the expedition ship Discovery was built there. The site was abandoned around 1940.

The former shipyard extends between the north bank of the Firth of Tay and Victoria Dock near the Tay Railway Bridge . The complex was expanded in 1850, 1870 and 1882. The east-facing main facade of the workshops along Chandlers Lane is 15 axes wide. The northernmost six axes were added around 1850. Arched segment gates are embedded in two places of the three-story row of buildings . Three more, relatively wide gates can be found on the west facade. Furthermore, wide, elongated openings have been made in the masonry, through which cables were led along the slipway .
