Alexander Stephen and Sons
Alexander Stephen and Sons Limited , often referred to as Alex Stephens or Stephens , was a Scottish shipbuilding company on the River Clyde in Linthouse, Govan in Glasgow .
history
The company was founded by Alexander Stephen, who began building ships in Burghead on the Moray Firth in 1750 .
In 1793 one of his descendants, William Stephen, founded a shipbuilding company in Footdee , Aberdeen .
In 1813, another member of the family named William opened a shipbuilding company in Arbroath .
Alexander Stephen, a member of the third generation of the family, merged the companies in Aberdeen and Arbroath in 1828 and moved production to the Panmure shipyard in Dundee in 1842 , after the shipyard in Aberdeen had closed in 1829. In 1850 part of the company was moved to the Kelvinhaugh shipyard near Glasgow , now known as Yorkhill Quay . The shipyard in Arbroath was finally closed in 1857. In 1870 operations were relocated again, this time to the Linthouse site near Glasgow acquired in 1868 .
In 1883 a tragic accident occurred when the steamer Daphne capsized immediately after being launched. 124 shipyard workers lost their lives in this accident.
In 1968, as recommended in the Geddes Report , Stephens merged with Yarrow Shipbuilders in Scotstoun, Charles Connell & Company in Scotstoun, and John Brown & Company of Clydebank to form Upper Clyde Shipbuilders and, after that company collapsed, closed in 1971.
