Burghead ( Scottish Gaelic : Am Broch ) is a small town in Moray , in northeast Grampian , Scotland . It is about twelve kilometers northwest of the city of Elgin and has a population of 1945.

Burghead is on a small peninsula that extends northwest into the Moray Firth . The present place was built between 1805 and 1809, over half of a Pictish fortress was built over. The complex that is worth seeing is called Burghead Fort .

During excavations, slabs of rock were found with images of bulls carved into them. These representations are known under the name "Burghead Bulls" and are symbols of the neighboring city that emerged much later.

The Burghead transmitter for long and medium wave radio frequencies has been located near Burghead since 1978 .
