Grampian ( Scottish Gaelic Roinn a 'Mhonaidh ) was a region in northeast Scotland from 1975 to 1996 . The administrative seat was the city of Aberdeen .

Surname

The region was named after the Grampian Mountains .

history

The region was formed in 1975 from the city of Aberdeen and the counties of Aberdeenshire , Kincadineshire , Banffshire and most of the county of Morayshire . The region was then divided into five districts :

In 1996 the regions and districts in Scotland were abolished and replaced by 32 Unitary Authorities . Three Unitary Authorities have been established in the Grampian region:

Between 1975 and 2013, the region was an independent police ("Grampian Police") and fire department ("Grampian Fire and Rescue Service") district.
